A.    READING

THE HOSPITAL
A hospital is an institution for the medical or psychiatric care and treatment of patients. Patients may be admitted directly to a ward as the result of an accident or illness. More often they will visit a daytime clinic as an out patient, referred by a private doctor to see a hospital specialist.
A hospital can seen a frightening place, especially for children. It is possible that adult patients are frightened, especially if admission was so sudden that they were not prepared for it.
If you look at the front of a large, modern hospital, you may notice that there are two separate entrances. One of them is for patients in need of immediate treatment. It is the emergency entrance. Here ambulances are to be seen pilling up at any hour of the day or night. The other entrance is the main entrance of the hospital.
On the ground floor inside the main entrance there are probably a reception area and waiting room and also an office. On the floors above and below are the numerous other departments. On a lower floor may be the laundry or kitchen. On another floor will be a maternity section for mothers and their babies. Their rooms are usually kept separate from the rest of the hospital, so that the babies do not catch other people’s illnesses. For more information here are some departments in a hospital.
